Plot Bunnies? More like Plot Tribbles!

Way back in the day when I was about fifteen years old and a beginner writer, I had this crippling fear.

I was scared that if I got a good idea and I wrote it into a story, I wouldn't get any more good ideas. It actually kept me from writing books for a long time, because I didn't want my head to be empty of stories.

Eventually I bucked up and starting writing books anyway, and I've since learned that fear was completely unfounded.

As soon as I finish a book, five more ideas clamor to be written. Right now my life is like this:

"As soon as I finish my WIP, I'll write one of you guys, I promise ..."

Well, ACTUALLY, it's more like this:

"HELP!"

I don't wonder how I'll come up with new ideas anymore. Instead, I wonder how I'll get them to leave me alone.

Does anybody else have this problem? I can't get the stories in my head to SHUT UP. And they're multiplying like tribbles ...

  1. Oh yes, and each idea splits off into sub ideas until my head, and my notebook, are full of random fragments of 'stuff'.

  2. Sarah: Yep, I have soooo many notebooks full of scribble notes, many of them from the middle of the night!

  3. That happens to me all the time! I find that when I have way too many ideas, it helps to combine a few of them into ONE story idea. I then write the gist of the story down so I can come back to it later. Once the plot is written down I can relax. Of course, writing it long-hand doesn't help at all because then it would just be a jumbled mess. I need my computer with all its lovely little folders I can put everything in. :)

this happens to me too- but my tribbles aren't nearly as fertile as yours. my problem is i never write them down and then they start to cannabalize each other. tribble slaughter!

  5. Haha I can so relate! I always wondered why "where do your ideas come from" is such a popular question. The question is how to get them to stop!

I try to focus on one project and then, if I get new ideas that don't fit, tuck them into other potential projects or start new ones. Of course I haven't actually started writing any of them yet... but soon, I promise! :P

  7. So far I've been lucky in that when I've needed an idea, I have it. No more, no less. Like the woman with the oil pot and Elijah.
